Waltham Now Red

Published by Chris Wangler- October 7, 2020.

Waltham’s coronavirus slide continued this week as state health officials gave the city a red case status, indicating high risk.
A coronavirus cases map published by the state’s Department of Public Healths (DPH) lists Waltham as red, indicating a daily average of eight or more COVID-19 cases per 100,000 residents.
In recent weeks, the number of red communities statewide has risen to 40. Woburn is now red, as are communities west of Framingham, which is still red.
When the DPH map was first released in the second week of August, Waltham’s status was green, indicating less than 4 coronavirus cases per 100,000 and low risk.
Roughly a month ago, on September 3, Waltham slipped to yellow.
The timing of Waltham’s red slide couldn’t be worse as school officials consider a hybrid return to school plan, with a vote expected in the coming weeks.
Those officials had been working with a yellow status, so the impact of the new red status is unclear.
