Crowded Field Features Three Preliminary Election Races

Some late drama Friday as two candidates beat the 5:00 p.m. deadline to get on the ballot for the November municipal election.

Former city council president Paul Brasco successfully submitted signatures on the last day to run at large, as did former candidate Lizzie Gelles to run in Ward 1.

It’s a crowded field this year. The at-large race, the mayoral race and the Ward 3 race all had enough candidates to trigger preliminary elections on September 12 to narrow down the fields.

In two wards (Ward 3 and Ward 9), current councilors are running for different seats, so those wards will have new city councilors in the new year.

The school committee will also have a new member, as current member Jane Gately pulled papers but declined to submit signatures. Her tenure will wrap up at the end of the year.

“Just very recently David and I learned another grandchild will be born before the end of the year, so I decided to devote much more time with my family,” Gately said, explaining her decision.

Two others who pulled papers (Ward 8’s Chris Hammer and at-large hopeful Rich Hynes) also did not submit signatures and will not be on the ballot.

Four ward races (Ward 2, Ward 5, Ward 6 and Ward 8) are uncontested, so incumbents will likely be re-elected.

The preliminary election will take place on September 12, followed by the municipal election on November 7.
