In a surprise twist Friday night, #33 Winchester upset #1 Catholic Memorial in the D1 boys basketball tournament.
Now, instead of playing the tourney’s top team in West Roxbury, the #17 Hawks will face a lower-seeded opponent at home on Monday night.
Back on February 27, Waltham easily won its first tournament game against #48 Concord Carlisle 63–36. Then they beat #16 Natick by 5 points in a thriller at Natick High School on Thursday.
The Hawks are happy to be return home for their Sweet 16 matchup, but are staying grounded as a Cinderella story emerges for a pumped-up Winchester team.
"We’re just grateful to have the opportunity to play on our court again and compete in front of our community,” said WHS head coach Mike Wilder.
The Round of 16 matchup takes place on Monday, March 6 at 7:00 p.m. at the Doc Cohn Gym at WHS. If the boys prevail, they’ll head to the Elite 8.
