A prisoner who escaped Monday evening from a Plymouth County Sheriff's transport vehicle was captured by police after an hourlong manhunt in Waltham.

Around 6:15 p.m., Waltham Police responded to Bear Hill Road and Route I95 South to assist in locating the prisoner, according to a Waltham Police release.

Massachusetts State Police said the man, 20-year-old Victor De Moura-Pereira, of Framingham, had been arrested Sunday in Framingham on multiple counts of assault and battery on a police officer.

On Monday, he escaped from the sheriff’s transport van during a traffic backup caused by emergency road repairs around I95.

De Moura-Pereira approached a person working on his vehicle in the parking lot of the MSPCA-Angell West at 293 Second Ave.

Taken aback, the man declined to cooperate with the handcuffed man, but their brief interaction allowed police to close in after he called 911, according to news reports.

Around 7:00 p.m. Victor De Moura-Pereira was taken into custody in the area of Bear Hill Road and Second Ave. Police helicopters and K9s were used in the search.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) had placed a detainer on him, according to State Police, and MSP have transferred him into ICE custody.
