Ground Broken for New Playgrounds

Waltham recreation and elected officials broke ground on two South Side playground projects Monday afternoon.
Both McDonald Playground off Newton Street and Thompson Playground on Charles Street were showing their age in recent years.
Work underway on the Thompson Playground project on May 4, 2021.
Extensive improvements to both include new splash pads, play structures and basketball/futsal courts.
Waltham Department of Recreation director Nick Abruzzi said both projects are slated for completion at the end of the summer.
A majority of the combined funding total of $3.2 million came from the city’s Community Preservation Act (CPA) monies.
Waltham's tree warden informed project officials that several existing trees should come down as part of the project, either because of disease or potential risk to park users. Waltham Rec. Dept. director Nick Abruzzi said the renovated park will have more trees than the former iteration.
In recent years, nearly all of Waltham’s playgrounds have been completely redone, many with CPA funding.
Mayor Jeannette McCarthy said Monday that the process to improve Lowell Field in Ward 5 will start up soon.
