OUI Crash Suspect Ran Red, Had Cocaine: Report
A Waltham man was arraigned Monday in Waltham District Court for his alleged involvement in a two-car crash Friday night that sent one to the hospital.
Bacon Street resident Luis A. Ordaz, 26, faced a number of charges, including operating under the influence of liquor and failing to stop at a red light, in connection with the crash at Vernon and South Streets around 8:15 p.m.
A police report said that a 39-year-old female was headed east on Vernon Street with a green light when a Dodge Charger operated by Ordaz struck the driver’s side of the Nissan Altima she was operating.
He had allegedly run a red light while heading south on South Street. After the collision, a witness said the Charger kept going, taking down a traffic signal pole and then striking a short stone wall in front of a residence at 46-48 South Street.
The female driver was transported to Newton-Wellesley Hospital with unknown injuries. Ordaz was not hurt in the crash.
A witness told police he saw Ordaz retrieve a 12 pack of Modelo beer from the Charger and throw it into the house’s side yard. Waltham Police later discovered the 12 pack with several empties and other beer cans.
Ordaz showed multiple signs of intoxication during police interviews, but initially denied drinking. He declined to take a breathalyzer, triggering a driver’s license suspension.
After he was arrested, Waltham Police found a bag of white powdery substance in a pants pocket believed to be cocaine.
Ordaz was arraigned Monday in Waltham District Court on charges of OUI, negligent motor vehicle operation, running a red light and possession of a Class B substance.
A judge ordered him released on personal recognizance, with the condition that he not drive. His next hearing is set for November 25.
