Mexican Place to Replace Posto

A hibernating Italian restaurant near the Westin, Osteria Posto at 99 Third Ave., is closing down.
It will be replaced by a new Mexican restaurant called The Painted Burro, which has another location in Davis Square. There’s no opening date currently.
It’s not new ownership, though. The same company, Alpine Restaurant Group, owns both the Italian and Mexican restaurants, with other locations elsewhere.
Posto Waltham went into COVID hibernation at the end of 2020, according to its Facebook page. The Italian restaurant opened back in late 2015.
Current Posto Waltham manager Joseph Cassinelli told the license commission Wednesday that “I’ve been struggling up there for years to get enough people into that location,” adding that the concept was “too fine dining.”
With the “more casual” Mexican concept, he hopes The Painted Burro will appeal to “a more millennial crowd” in the area.
The Painted Burro serves creative Mexican food, specializing in unique twists on tacos, enchiladas and especially margaritas.
Cassinelli said The Painted Burro in Waltham will be “a higher end version of what’s in Somerville.” He will remain manager of the new place.
While Posto has been closed in Waltham, two other Posto locations, in Somerville and Bedford, have remained open.
The Painted Burro in Somerville also hibernated for the winter, referring customers to its other Posto locations for its Mexican fare.
