Spots in Star Wars

Robots developed by Waltham-based Boston Dynamics appeared in the first episode of Disney Plus’ new Star Wars series The Book of Boba Fett.

A handful of the company’s four-legged Spot robots walk through the city of Mos Espa on Tatooine shortly before Boba Fett and his assistant Fennec Shand are attacked by hired killers.

It happens 18 minutes and 17 seconds into the pilot episode.

The company confirmed the appearance on Twitter, saying “Spot’s gone to work in a lot of different environments this year and now we’ve added a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away to the list!”

Not everyone is happy, though. Some Star Wars purists claimed that the real-world robots seemed like product placements or were out of place among the highly theatrical droids in Star Wars’ fantasy world.

Boston Dynamics is one of the world’s top robotics engineering firms. It is based in a fully renovated space at the former postal facility at 200 Smith Street in Waltham.
